PORTO: 5 Best Sunsets

Sunsets in Porto:

Watching the sunset is a must-do whenever you visit a different city, especially for the first time.
It is not only a very romantic and pleasant thing for couples to do/witness, but even as a group of friends enjoying each other company over a good glass of wine.
Even if you are a solo traveler the sunset ends up being a beautiful thing to watch, and let’s face it, it is an incredible scenario for photography!
In Porto we don’t lack places to watch the sunset, and here is a list of the best 5 spots to watch it:

1. Jardim do Morro:

It is one of the closest places to the City center to watch the sunset and with easy access.
Yes, it is located in Vila Nova de Gaia, but it does have one of the most privileged views of Porto’s Downtown and the Douro River.
You only need to cross the Luís I. Bridge and you are there, how much easier can you get?

So: a good and complete view of this splendid city and adding to that the river and the sunset? How could this not be the first pick?

2. Passeio das Virtudes:

This lookout viewpoint gives you a direct view over the Douro River, more specifically it’s the mouth.
It is a preferred gathering spot for the local youth where they spend their free afternoons socializing with their friends.
It is also right at the heart of the City, so easy access.
At a 5 minutes walk from the “Virtudes” a good alternative is to climb the Clérigos Tower, where, at the top, you have a 360º view of the whole city and including, obviously, the sea and the sunset over it.
The ticket costs 6€ and it is open in the late afternoon from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. - so sunset and night view of the city in one. 😁

3. Jardins do Palácio de Cristal:

In the Crystal Palace Gardens, you can have not only one stunning setting and view for the sunset, but you can also share it with the majestic peacocks wandering wildly through the gardens.
The place itself is worth your time to visit, the incredible gardens, the beautiful overall views points, their animals, and to top it off with the sunset? Just a Perfect end for an afternoon!
Now our last 2 choices are for those who don’t have the luck of living by the sea, thus choosing the beaches close to Porto.

4. Matosinhos:

The coastal area of Porto, that starts right after the mouth of the Douro River, is filled with beautiful beaches, some of them being rocky which just adds up for the picturesque natural scenario. Imagine how magical it would be to be able to snatch that perfect picture of a wave bursting with the sunset right behind!
Luckily on this coastline, you will have plenty of opportunities for that!
As a plus, a way to get to the mouth of the river is to catch tram number 1 that will take you from the city center, alongside the river, to the mouth of the river. It starts behind the S. Francisco Church.

5. Senhor da Pedra:

If you are staying in Vila Nova de Gaia instead of Porto, or just happened to be across the river, Madalena Beach is also a very good choice to watch the sunset.
If you want something more special, or even just different from being on a beach with the sunset, you can walk a bit further south and you will eventually reach the Senhor da Pedra Chappel.
Now you are asking yourself, “sunset/chappel/special, what’s the relation?” well this Chappel is on the sea, literally! The only access to it is if it is low tide, and imagine if you have the time to plan accordingly you could get there and watch the sunset on a high tide time, with the chappel surrounded by water, how cool is that?
